BrotherStrong Weekly Encouragement and Prayer
Healthy Black Man Challenge Week 40
Focus: Healthy Self, Courage and Confronting Fear
Week of October 5, 2026
Theme: "Do It Afraid"
Weekly Encouragement
Brother,
What would you do if fear was not making the decision?
Make the call?
Apply for the position?
Start the business?
Go back to school?
Have the conversation?
Make the appointment?
End the unhealthy relationship?
Ask for help?
Try again?
Sometimes the greatest thing standing between where we are and where we want to be is not ability.
It is fear.
Fear of failure.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of embarrassment.
Fear of change.
Fear of what people will say.
And sometimes, even fear of succeeding because success may require us to become someone we have never been before.
Brother, courage does not mean you are never afraid.
Courage means fear no longer gets the final vote.
Some of us have been waiting to feel confident before we move.
But confidence often comes after the first step, not before it.
You may never feel completely ready.
Do it anyway.
Your hands may shake.
Your voice may tremble.
Your mind may give you a hundred reasons to stay where you are.
Take the step anyway.
There are opportunities on the other side of fear.
There are relationships waiting on the other side of an honest conversation.
There is healing waiting on the other side of vulnerability.
There is growth waiting on the other side of discomfort.
There may even be a version of you waiting on the other side that you have not met yet.
Brother, fear can warn you.
Fear can inform you.
But fear should not control you.
This week, stop asking:
"What if I fail?"
And start asking:
"What if fear is the only thing keeping me from discovering what is possible?"
Do it afraid.
Weekly Prayer
God,
Thank You for giving us courage even when we feel afraid.
You know the fears we talk about.
And You know the ones we keep hidden.
The fear of failing.
The fear of rejection.
The fear of losing.
The fear of changing.
The fear of not being enough.
Help us recognize when fear is keeping us from the life You are calling us toward.
Give us wisdom so that we do not confuse courage with recklessness.
Give us discernment to know when to move, when to wait, and when to walk away.
But when it is time to move, give us the courage to take the step.
Remind us that we do not have to see the entire path to take the next faithful step.
Strengthen our hearts.
Steady our minds.
Guide our decisions.
And help us become men who refuse to allow fear to determine our future.
Amen.
Weekly Activation: Week 40 Challenge
Theme: Face It
Mind: Write down one fear that has been influencing your decisions. Then answer these three questions:
What exactly am I afraid of?
What is this fear costing me?
What is one healthy action I can take despite it?
Body: Do one physically challenging but appropriate activity this week that reminds you that discomfort does not always mean danger. Push yourself within your abilities.
Finish the walk.
Complete the workout.
Take the stairs.
Stretch a little further.
Remind yourself that you can move through discomfort.
Spirit: Each morning this week, name one fear in prayer. Do not pretend it does not exist. Give it to God. Then pray: "God, give me wisdom to know what to do and courage to do it."
Reflection Question: What opportunity have I been calling "not the right time" when the real issue may be fear?
The Journey Continues
Forty weeks.
Think about that.
For forty weeks, you have been challenged to examine yourself.
Your health.
Your thoughts.
Your habits.
Your relationships.
Your finances.
Your peace.
Your joy.
Your faith.
And your future.
At some point, reflection has to become action.
There is something you already know you need to do.
Maybe you have prayed about it.
Talked about it.
Thought about it.
Planned it.
Delayed it.
Brother, perhaps now it is time to move.
Healthy Self does not mean living without fear.
It means becoming healthy enough that fear no longer runs your life.
Weekly Affirmation
I acknowledge my fear, but I will not surrender to it.
Fear does not determine my future.
I have courage to take the next step.
I trust God for wisdom and direction.
I do not have to feel fearless to move forward.
I can do it afraid.
A Word to Black Women Reading This
To every Black woman reading this,
Sometimes what looks like hesitation in a Black man may actually be fear he has never learned how to name.
Fear of failing his family.
Fear of disappointing people.
Fear of starting over.
Fear of not having enough.
Fear of admitting that he does not know what comes next.
Many men have been taught to hide fear rather than talk about it.
This week, help us remind Black men that courage is not the absence of fear.
Courage is moving wisely even when fear is present.
And please continue sharing the Healthy Black Man Challenge each week with every Black man you know.
Share it with your son.
Share it with your husband or partner.
Share it with your father.
Share it with your brothers.
Share it with your coworkers and friends.
Invite every Black man you know to continue this journey toward becoming healthier in body, soul, and spirit.
Your encouragement may give a man the confidence to take a step he has been afraid to take.
Thank you for encouraging Black men.
Thank you for believing in Black men.
Thank you for reminding us that vulnerability and courage can exist in the same man.
Weekly Challenge for Women
This week, ask one Black man in your life:
"Is there something you really want to do, but fear has been holding you back?"
If he shares it with you, resist the urge to immediately tell him what he should do.
Listen first.
Then ask:
"What would one small step forward look like?"
Encourage the step.
Sometimes a man does not need someone to push him.
He needs someone to remind him that he is capable of moving.
Closing Reflection
Brother,
There are twelve weeks left in this year.
Do not spend them waiting to become fearless.
You may still be nervous.
Move wisely anyway.
You may still have questions.
Ask them and keep moving.
You may not know exactly how everything will work out.
Take the next responsible step.
Maybe the goal is not to eliminate fear.
Maybe the goal is to stop allowing fear to eliminate possibilities.
You have spent forty weeks becoming healthier.
Now let the healthier version of you make some decisions the fearful version of you would never have made.
Make the call.
Submit the application.
Start the conversation.
Schedule the appointment.
Write the first page.
Take the first step.
Brother, courage may not always roar.
Sometimes courage simply whispers:
"I'm scared, but I'm going anyway."
Do it afraid.
There may be something extraordinary waiting on the other side of your next courageous step.
Until all have been touched... keep reaching!
Jeremy
